Measuring joint range of motion: The range of motion capable at a joint can be measured with many sophisticated devises. The links below are some examples of such devises that typically run about $75,000.00-$100,000.00.

A less expensive measuring devise, that is commonly used in clinical environments, is the manual goniometer shown below.  It basically works as a protractor; the stationary arm is placed on the stationary segment and the moving arm is placed on the moving segment. Units are in degrees and in the anatomical position all joints are at 0°.  What is the hip range of motion for the illustration below?  Place a protractor over the image to determine the angle.  If you do not have a protractor buy one now.
