Lane et al. (1994) was one of the earliest contributions in fluvial geomorphology to talk about spatially continuous topographic mapping/surveying as a monitoring tool. They show how repeat topography can be used to calculate cut (erosion) and fill (deposition) volumes and discuss how the quality of topographic data impacts the ability to calculate change.

Brasington et al. (2003) is one of the first fluvial geomorphic change detection articles to describe how rtkGPS can be used to undertake repeat topographic surveys and estimate sediment flux.
