Multimodal Remix Reflection

Use the below steps to guide you through the composing process.

Pre-Writing (Preparing to Write)

To present your conclusions about the research in a new rhetorical situation, you will complete the following before composing your draft:

1. Reflect on your purpose and audience.
   1. Purpose: In creating your artifact, what conclusions did you want to present about your current event? What about your research did you think was most important to share? What did you want your reader to think, know, or do after learning about your event?
   2. Audience: In creating your artifact, what audience did you decide would benefit from hearing your conclusions about the current event?  How did you use what you discovered to better inform them?
2. Reflect on medium and genre.
   1. Medium: What did you decide was the best medium to address your chosen audience? In other words, what was the "method of delivery" you used to get your information to your audience? 
   2. Genre: How was your artifact an appropriate type of communication for your purpose and audience? 
3. Reflect rhetorical appeals.
   1. What rhetorical appeals did you choose to appeal to your chosen audience, and why? 
   2. How are these appeals evident in your artifact? 
4. Reflect on artifact as a final product
   1. How well do you think your artifact represents what you hoped it would about your research?
   2. What limitations did you have (time, knowledge, experience, tools, etc.) in creating your artifact?
   3. What are the particular strengths of your artifact?
   4. If you had more time, knowledge, experience, tools, etc., what would you have done differently in creating your artifact?

Drafting (Writing)

Once you have analyzed your rhetorical situation, you will compose a 600-750 word reflection essay, in MLA format, that includes explanation of the following components:

Introduction

• Overview of topic, artifact, and goals. Introduce your essay by explaining the topic, key 'conversations' and conclusions you developed in your Investigating the Conversation Essay. Include a main idea/claim/thesis that explains the following:
  • What multimodal artifact did you create to communicate the conclusions of your research; to whom did you direct that communication; what was your purpose in that communication; how effective do you feel your artifact is in achieving your communication goals, and why?
    • Example: To communicate the importance of taking children for safe, routine well-child care during the COVID-19 pandemic (purpose), I  created an informational flier (artifact) for families in my neighborhood (audience). I feel this was an effective artifact for my audience and purpose because it allowed me to reach my audience in a realistic, tactile way during the pandemic (evaluation).

Body Paragraphs

Please note that the list of content here does not represent a direct correlation to the order or number of paragraphs you should include in your paper. Use these topics as a guide to your general content, but recognize that the various categories and topics will overlap at times. Organize your essay in the way that makes most sense to you for explaining and reflecting upon your rhetorical choices in the Multimodal Remix Artifact assignment.

• Rhetorical Situation (purpose, audience, genre, medium, rhetorical appeals):
  • Go into more detail about the various elements of the rhetorical situation you employed in creating your artifact, including purpose, audience, genre, medium, and rhetorical appeals. Why did you select those rhetorical strategies? Elaborate on whether your rhetorical choices were effective and what you learned through the process of creating your artifact. Your paper should clearly demonstrate your understanding of your selected rhetorical situation by describing your rationale/justification for your purpose, rhetorical appeals, audience, genre, and medium.
• Evaluation of Artifact
  • Using your reflections from #4 in the pre-writing section above as a guide, evaluate the artifact you created. Remember that the goal of the Multimodal Remix Artifact assignment was not to create a perfect, professional example of the genre medium you selected but rather to consider which rhetorical strategies best suited your message, audience, and purpose. As you evaluate your artifact, consider the following:
    • Describe what you made for your artifact (link to it or include an image in your paper).
    • Evaluate what worked well and what you might have done differently given a different set of skills, time, or other circumstances. 
    • Connect your evaluation to specifics of the rhetorical situation you identified and were working to address in your artifact's design and execution.
• Reflection on Research
  • What role did your research play in communicating your purpose to your audience? Why did you include the sources you did in your artifact? What do you think is the role of research in allowing you and others to better understand events and ideas that shape our worldview and actions?  
  • In your essay, you should summarize/paraphrase/quote at least two of the sources you used in your artifact as you explain why you used them within the artifact.

Conclusion

• Conclude your essay with a final reflective paragraph that summarizes what you learned from creating your artifact and communicating research to a specific audience. Further, you may use the conclusion to offer your own thoughts about what you've learned, in this and other projects in this class, about how to effectively apply the rhetorical situation to various communication scenarios in your own life.
